Play supports cognitive, physical, emotional, and social development and encourages imagination and exploration. My most recent book release is all about sharing with children the power of listening to their heartbeat. We each have moments in our lives when our heart begins to race and noticing it is a great place to reconnect with the body and choose a coping method to self-regulate.
Things that make Alex’s heart race in Beat Beat Thump are worries about school, friendship struggles, and trying new things . Sometimes the pounding of his heartbeat gets so loud that it’s all he can hear.
Alex learns to listen to the “beat, beat, thump” of his heart while feeling both panic and peace. When his anxiety grows, Alex uses techniques he has learned, like stomping his feet and focusing on his heartbeat, to center himself and regain his calm.
